Derek Herman is a graduate from the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University where he received his BFA in Acting. He is NEW to New York, and is so thrilled to be working at Acting Out! Since moving to New York, Derek has been seen in Sleepy Hollow, the musical, Spice Rack, and Trolious & Cressida, and is signed with Bella Agency as a Commercial/Print Model. As a Teaching Artist, Derek has taught and directed for the National High School Institute Cherub’s Program at Northwestern University, The Chicago High School for the Arts, Northwest Children’s Theater, and Northlight Theater. Derek has performed with a variety of regional theaters including Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Artists Repertory Theater, Raven Theater and toured through California with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Derek was also the founder and Artistic Director of Fearless Theater in Chicago which produced shows that focuses on the perils and the odyssey of the teenage experience. Roberta, John and the staff at AO are in one word “Amazing”If you are interested in pursuing training in drama, vocals... or broadway theater either beginner or very advanced there is simply no better place to be. The instruction is professional, serious and there is “no fluff” on the recommendations being told to you. The progress Roberta made with my son in one short year is beyond any expectation I could have even dreamed of. I’m honestly not a fan of giving online reviews, as a matter of fact this is my first but because I hold acting out in such high esteem, I felt compelled to do so. My daughter attended Acting Out for high school audition prep and received offers to all of her top choices (Laguardia,... Frank Sinatra) but even if she hadn’t, I would write this glowing review because Roberta and John are THE BEST. I’m actually not sure how they do it, they’re enormously personally invested in each individual kid in the program and go above and beyond in so many ways. My daughter, Tierney, grew exponentially as an actor and vocalist this year - honestly a shocking amount. She loved every minute of her time at Acting Out and became close friends with all of her classmates. Acting Out feels like a family, it's a family business with heart backed up by a truly thorough knowledge of craft and technique. They make sure the kids feel fully supported and cared for all the time and they individualize support for your unique kid. Full disclosure, I’m also an actor and can assure you that Roberta and John are the kind of coaches you find once in a lifetime - they’re mentors. They’re the kind of teachers you thank in your Oscar speech 20 years later for setting you on the path, believing in you and pushing you to the edge of your abilities. They’re wonderful. Amazing place with professional people. I prepared my oldest daughter in this studio for middle and high school... admissions. As I planned, came back with my little one and yes, she got in Bay Academy with their preparation. I am so thankful to Roberta and John for everything they have done. It is the best acting school in Brooklyn. Definitely recommend.read more

Who knew that almost one year ago I’d come to meet and know the most benevolent and inspirational people ever at Acting... Out.I want to start by saying Roberta Lowe is such an extraordinary and exceptional person!A very good friend of mine had referred Acting Out in order to help prepare my 13 year old daughter, Saje to audition for LaGuardia and PPAS high school. I had no idea that other kids had to start preparing very early on and as I have come to find out i was already late in the game…You see, I am a Registered Nurse and a single mom of three young and beautiful girls. My oldest daughter just turned thirteen and had become inspired by her best friend, Jonah Mussolino to get into acting and singing. Jonah is an up and coming child star and was featured on many Broadway shows as well as starring on a Netflix series. He has been with acting out since a very young age. My good friend, who recommended Acting Out is Jonah’s mom.I was very skeptical because I knew I would not have to time to support my daughter through this. After speaking with Roberta Loew for the first time and explaining my circumstances as a single mother, she gave me an overly confident feeling that seemed too good to be true. Although it was late in the game, Roberta reassured me that she will work closely with my daughter to make sure she catches up.I thought I’d give it a try and WOW best decision ever!!! Robert Loew took full responsibility immediately and every word that she stated on the very first conversation about how she will make sure that Saje is well prepared for her LaGuardia and PPAS audition was indeed true and ultimately an accomplished goal! She knew exactly what Saje needed to prepare well and made sure saje had all the specific courses to help her. Also, because Roberta knew I worked long hours, She took on the role of a second mother and made sure saje was attending all classes and getting her work done. Roberta Loew was not playing! She was on top of it. At one point, Saje was lacking and falling behind and Roberta caught it immediately. She talked to me about what Saje could work on, and encouraged Saje to not give up.Saje built a special bond with each and every instructor she had at Acting out. The classes were small and personal. Every instructor that Saje worked with was patient and full of encouragement and inspiration. Acting Out is truly heaven sent! Every child and family deserves to feel as special as Acting Out made us feel. It wasn’t about just getting the job done, it was on a whole different level!After an intense few months of preparation, Saje was ready to record. We got the opportunity to finally meet Roberta In person at the studio. She worked with Saje and did not give up until she felt Saje recorded the best clip. Roberta recorded two monologues, and two songs. We sent them in for the highschool application, and surprise! Saje made it into LaGuardia vocal, and was waitlisted for PPAS drama!Roberta Loew never seemed to have a doubt. I am truly inspired by her character! So confident and the energy that flowed through her was so strong and contagious! Truly one of a kind.All thanks to Roberta Loew and the amazing teachers at Acting Out! Each one is extremely talented, hardworking and sweet. We could not have done it otherwise! What an amazing learning experience for him! He currently attends Mark Twain and recently was accepted into LaGuardia HS as well as Beacon HS. My 2nd grader LOVED every moment spent in the 2 classes she was enrolled into, and when Covid hit we had reservations... about continuing classes thru Video Calls. We stuck with it and I am super grateful to this team of professionals!!! Not only was my kid being engaged every week (btw for longer than the in-person classes) but the end result was a spectacular LIVE virtual performance - what a feat!!! This talented bunch got a group of 2nd graders to perform an truly fun show with all the fixins. Next season both my kids want to join. Thanks Acting Out!!read more

Acting out is an amazing acting school. The staff has always been friendly and professional. Roberta has always been... available to answer any questions day or night. Two of my children have taken various classes there. They both love going there. We originally found this school to help prep for middle school admissions and both my children were able to get into their first choice school. Most recently we have gone through high school admissions and have been getting amazing feedback from top drama schools. My son just received an offer to LaGuardia Highschool. We attribute this to the prep we got at Acting out. If you or your child is thinking about performance arts, this is definitely the place to be.read more

My husband, our daughter, and I absolutely love Acting Out! Our daughter attended prep classes for intermediate school... auditions, and was accepted to her first choice. More recently she attended prep high school audition classes, and was accepted to her first choice again!
